John served in the Royal Artillery for the first few years of the war. He joined the 384th Field Battery of the 142nd Field Regiment in Taunton on 18th October 1939 at the age of 21, and left when he was transferred to the Royal Engineers in April 1942. During his time in the artillery 384th Battery was part of the home forces, posted to various parts of the UK. After John's time with them, 384th Battery suffered heavy losses in Italy at the battles of Monte Cassino and Florence.
